Barbecue Safety Tips

Last week, ITV reported that a house in north London was destroyed by a fire that was thought to have been started by a disposable barbecue which was left on decking, which got us thinking about barbecue safety.

On top of this the last survey by HASS/LASS in 2002 reported that there was an estimated 1,800 people visit A&E in the UK due to an accident involving a barbecue, which, whilst the numbers may have changed over the last 15 years, show that there is also more risk than just your homes.

With summer on its way and as your local supplier of barbecues, we don’t want any accidents happening to you, so here’s our top tips for barbecue safety:

  • Make sure that your barbecue is in good working order before you start using it. Make sure there’s no loose or damaged parts that need repairing.

  • Make sure that you start your barbecuing in a suitable location. Your barbecue should be located on a flat surface away from any sheds, trees or shrubs.

  • Keep children and pets away from the barbecue. If there’s any garden games going on try to make sure they don’t encroach the cooking area.

  • Never leave the barbecue unattended. Wait for the barbecue to be cool before leaving it.

  • Keep a backup plan. A bucket of water or sand in case a fire does emerge.

  • Don’t try and move a hot barbecue

  • Don’t try to barbecue in an enclosed place

  • Don’t try to dispose hot ashes

Hopefully this will help you safely have barbecues in the coming summer and will reduce the likeliness of any accidents happening and we hope you enjoy your future barbecues!
