Monday 17th September Blog

Good Morning!

It's starting to get a chillier, Autumn is on it's way!

This week, parts of Britain could see up to 70mph gusts of wind this week as Storm Helene hits. Travel services are likely to be disrupted, and trees could be uprooted due to the strong winds, set to hit between 6pm tonight and 8am tomorrow. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning, meaning"be aware", covering the north of England, Northern Ireland, the south west of Scotland and Lothian Borders, Strathclyde, Yorkshire and Humber, Wales and the south west of England. The weather could create travel problems, including delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges. There could also be power cuts for homes in the affected areas, and large waves could hit coastal communities.

Hurricane Florence has hit North and South Carolina since it hit land on Thursday. The coastal city of Wilmington has been cut off from the rest of the state due to heavy floods following the hurricane. All roads in and out are impassible and the city is now being described as an 'island in the state'. Around 400 people have been rescued from the city, and the first 2 known fatalities were reported on Friday Morning. At least 15 other people are reported to have died from storm-related incidents since Thursday across North and South Carolina. Florence has weakened into a Tropical Depression with winds of 35mph. Some parts of the Carolinas have seen up to 40inch of rain since Thursday, and officials have warned River levels are yet to peak in some places.  The US coast guard and volunteer boats have been helping people affected by rising flood waters across the states. Officials in North Carolina have said about 900 people have been rescued from floodwaters there, and about 15,000 people are still in emergency shelters.

Two new british satellites have been successfully launched into low earth orbit to demonstrate the latest technology for monitoring land and sea. The NovaSAR-1 radar satellite and the S1-4 high-definition optical satellite, both developed and manufactured by a firm based in Surrey, launched from a space centre in India. Backed by a £21m government investment, the NovaSAR-1 can take images day or night, even through thick clouds. This means it can monitor illegal logging in high, cloud-covered tropical rainforests, such as the Amazon. It is also capable of tracking floods and oil spills at sea. Perhaps best of all, its designers believe it could excel at monitoring shipping to help law enforcement agencies catch smugglers.
