Monday 3rd September Blog

Hello and welcome to September!

We hope all the locals had a great time at the Rushbearing over the weekend, and back to school this week!

The Police have launched a crackdown on drivers with poor eyesight, in order to assess road safety concerns. Any drivers who are pulled over during September will be tested on the spot to see if they can read a number plate from 20 metres away. The forces in Thames Valley, Hampshire and the West Midlands will be running the tests, supported by the charity Brake and Vision Express. Drivers who fail the test will have their licence revoked immediately.

It has been announced this morning that Chris Evans will leave Radio 2 to go to Virgin Radio. Chris has presented the breakfast show on the station for the past 8 years, and will broadcast his last show in December. He has said "In many ways Virgin Radio is my spiritual home, I see nothing but exciting and groundbreaking opportunities ahead. In a medium that is changing so quickly on a daily basis, the potential for growth is unprecedented. Our plan is, to give it all we've got, see where we can get to and have the most possible fun along the way. It makes me smile every time I think about it."

Farmers are accusing the government of not doing enough to help deal with the effects of the drough over this summer. The National Farmers Union (NFU) has accused the environment secretary of not acting quick enough to seek a relaxation of European rules that prevent farmers from grazing or cutting grass from certain areas of land. Michael Gove promised help when he met with farmers last month, however despite governments in Scotland, Wales and other parts of Europe putting plans in place, the NFU says the situation in England is very different.
