Monday 5th November Blog

Good Morning!

Remember, Remember, the 5th of November!

Leicester City footballers have visited a Thai temple to pay their respects to Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, the club's late owner. The popular billionaire, along with 4 other people, were killed when his helicopter crashed and burst into flames as it left the King Power Stadium on 27th October. The 60-year-old's funeral begn behind closed doors on Saturday, and an official ceremony to mark his passing will last uintil 9th November. The players made the 13-hour flight after winning a match against Cardiff on Saturday, the first since Vichai's passing. Others who died when the helicopter came down in a car park were two of his staff members, Nusara Suknamai and Kaveporn Punpare, pilot Eric Swaffer and his partner Izabela Roza Lechowicz.

Foreign Nationals who love abroad will be eligible to join the armed forces, as British residency requirements for service are set to be scrapped. The Ministry of Defence will remove the need for Commonwealth citizens to have lived in the UK for 5 yeard before applying for service, ministers are set to announce on Monday. The military hopes to recruit 1,350 extra personnel from overseas every year to the Navy, Army and Air Force. It comes as the armed forces are struggling to recruit enough servicemen and women to fill a shortfall in their ranks. Applicants from countries including India, Australia, Canada and Fiji will be considered for all roles in the forces, without having lived in the UK. The army will begin the admissions from early next year, while the Navy and RAF will begin the process immediately.

The Tower of London's moat has been filled with around 10,000 lit torches to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. The stunning tribute, called Beyond the Deepening Shadow, will be repeated each night until Remembrance Sunday. Sunday eveming was the first showing, beginning with a ceremonial Beefeater guard bringing a flame down from the tower into the moat, which had been submerged in smoke. Representatives from the armed forces and volunteers then used the flame to ignite the thousands of other torches staked into or placed on the ground underneath the tower.
